DIY activity for kids: Homemade Playdough

Our kids love playdough but it dries quickly, not to mention the kids always mix up the colours and end up with one giant ball of brownish dough. Had I known it was so easy to make, I would never had bought any in the first place.

The only ingredient you probably don’t already have in your kitchen is cream of tartar and perhaps food coloring, which can be found in the baking aisle of your usual supermarket. Cream of tartar gives elasticity to the dough and will make it last for months. If you can’t find it, you can replace it with baking powder.

Supplies

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar (or 2 tablespoons of baking powder)
  • Food coloring
  • Saucepan

Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.

Remove from heat and add flour.

Stir and knead until smooth (add a bit of flour if it feels too sticky).

Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.
